System shuts down on its own

Recommended Posts

Basically, I would be doing some kind of process intensive job and the screen would freeze for a second or two then shut down with no shut down window...This happens way to frequently now and I need to know how to correct this. I must say this has been happening a lot since my Overclocking experiments, and my cpu runs very hot now even with the fan all the way. I'm getting readings of like 30-50 now, instead of 15-30... Right now I have not been overclocked in a long time..my specs are in the sig

Someone help me correct this or at least tell my computer not to shut down on it's own because of temperatures because i know how messed up the brisbane cores are.

Overclocking doesn't usually cause problems like this after returning to normal running unless either some damage has been done to the CPU which is now causing it to overheat or that some physical changes have been made to your setup.

Did you move/change/replace any heatsinks? Are all the fans working correctly and blowing in the right direction?

no i didnt do anything to the heatsinks, for the fans i have my cpu fan blowing out and i bought a zalman vf1000 for my gfx card and that is blowing in which way is correct?

The CPU fan should blow on to the CPU. Rear case fans should blow out of the case and be placed at a high position, front case fans (if attached) normally blow into the case and should be located at a low position (usually blowing on to the hard drive(s)).

Are the heatsinks free from dust? It always surprises me that even small amounts of dust can seriously affect the efficiency of cooling systems.

Event Viewer (Control Panel > System Management) will give you some clues about the causes of this. Also if you close Re-start after system failure, instead of a re-start you will get a message on the screen indicating the cause of the shut down. Please post again if you don't know how to do these things.

Frequently these sort of sudden shutdowns occur after uninstalling programs but an instruction stills remains in the system to start it. If the sysstem can't find it you then often get a crash.

The CPU is too hot!!! To protect your hardwares, the system will shut down automatically.

Check the Cpu cooling fans!!!

I'm not sure how to do this, but this problem happens so often now when I do anything. Could my CPU be messed up?? Im using an amazing fan on it and it won't stay cool. How do I check which components are causing this problem? Is there a stress test that will tell me?

I have no idea why my cpu is so hot my cooling fans are running perfectly. I think my cpu is messsed up

It looks to me as if you need to renew the thermal compound between the CPU + Heatsink ?

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/274

if that is replaced, + the CPU fan is working properly

check that your fan is fitted as shown here ?

and you still get the problems .......... then as -pops- said earlier the fault will probably lie within the CPU

I think Boris is on the right path. If there has been any disturbance to the mounting of the heatsink on the CPU, this can result in all sorts of overheating difficulties. Have you removed the heatsink at any time?
