What is DEP (Data Execution Prevention) in IE8?

At this link HERE from Windows Secrets Newsletter you can find a helpful article about Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and how it now works in IE8. Some websites are advising that DEP should be disabled. Susan Bradley advises not to do that, instead, she writes, learn how to work with its very valuable features.

DEP is now a key part of Vista and Internet Explorer 8. When I try to install older software on newer machines, I must configure Data Execution Prevention to allow the software installer to run with DEP disabled. (See Figure 1.)

But at release of both of these, were Microsoft's most bug-full products they made.
