Executioner Posted October 8, 2009 Report Share Posted October 8, 2009 I have several shortcuts in a folder on my desktop here at work. They link to several excel and word files. When I was running Win2k, each time the file was updated, the shortcut date was also updated when I re-opened the file. This made it easy for me to see which files have been updated each month.Now I'm using XP, and it does not update the shortcut dates. I've search the net and could not find anything on the subject. Anyone know of a way with software or not, to have the shortcut dates updated each time the file its pointing to is updated? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Usually, there are always mods to clone another OS' features so there may be something you can download which will do this for you. I've even been able to find a Windows mod for Ubuntu's roll-up windows on double-click :)For this specific setting, did Win2k have a name for it? Dencandy Posted October 11, 2009 Report Share Posted October 11, 2009 Yes, in XP the shortcut "modified" date is only updated if the shortcut itself is changed (e.g. by changing the icon). However, the Accessed item for the short-cut is updated each time it's opened. To see the dates folders or files are modified in XP you have to list them from the folder directory and use View, Choose Details... After that you can see the date the folder/file was modified by using Find Target after right clicking on the shortcut & selecting Properties > Shortcut. It must be some special setting on your Win2K system; something that can possibly also be set on XP?Really? I have VMWare installed and put a fresh copy of Win2k sp4. I went in control panel and changed the date to one day before today, then created a test file called TEST.TXT using notepad. Saved the file. Went to the desktop and created my shortcut to this file. Opened it up twice and the shortcut date did not change. On my third try, I edited the file with more text and saved it. Shortcut still shows the old date UNTIL I double click on the shortcut again to open the file. That is when the shortcut date is updated.
