Jack Alton Posted October 25, 2009 Report Share Posted October 25, 2009 Recently I had to get a whooole new motherboard and power supply for my computer and now two things keep happening. (1) The laser mouse I have is on even if the computer itself is off and if I click it the computer turns on. Not exactly a problem since I think it's damn cool but I don't know why this is happening. (2) Whenever I turn off the computer before windows loads, it automatically restarts. Is this behavior really bad for my computer?I'm guessing this has something to do with the motherboard and I'm guessing I should use BIOS but I don't know how. Please help! -pops- Posted October 25, 2009 Report Share Posted October 25, 2009 It is quite common for peripherals, especially USB driven ones to remain powered up when the main machine is powered down. This is because most computers have a trickle current running all the time they are connected to the mains. The only way to shutdown completely is to pull the plug. Even so, if your mouse is battery powered, the power state of the computer is immaterial. It will remain powered up all the time it has viable batteries.Regarding your second point, why would you want to turn off the computer before Windows loads? I would guess that it is not at all good for the machine as I remember a long time ago a computer being shutdown by a power cut just as it was booting up. It never booted up again. Please help!Did you fit the mother board or did you have it done elsewhere?Accompanying the mother board should have been a manual and this should have within it a section on the BIOS. You need to have a look at this first before delving into the inner workings. There are two or three BIOS system makers but the principles are much the same.To get to the BIOS you need to hit a particular key in the time period between switching on and the commencement of the Boot Up. Jack Alton Posted October 25, 2009 Author Report Share Posted October 25, 2009 Thanks for your replies!I got it fitted somewhere else and I have a feeling the guy who did set it up that way maybe because it was more convenient (my computer got fried before). Also, I know it's a bad habit but when I'm putting in a new HD for example I just want to check the BIOS to see if its being recognized and I don't really want to wait all that time for windows to load and then shut down.Is there anyway I can cut the current running to the peripherals? Also. I was fiddling around with the DVDR drive and now it opens .... randomly. It happens when the computer just turns on but it also did it when I was in windows. And I didn't do anything.
