Old fashioned service.

I have just had a call from BT. It was in answer to a message I sent them regarding the peculiar way in which the time taken to connect to my emails has suddenly started to vary. Logging on to the internet is just as it always has been, not quite instantaneous but perfectly fasy enough for a pensioner.

Once logged on, firing up Thundrbird, until about three weeks ago, was virtually instantaneous. Then it started varying from instantaneous to 15 - 20 seconds, and on a couple of occasions not at all. It was just as though it was looking for, or checking, a password......very slowly.

We are served by a connection to a diabolically bad underground main cable, that has been in use since 1938 (and has been soled and heeled ever since), which passes from the village to the East of us to the the one to the West of us.

The BT caller had a Northern Irish accent and was not reading from a script, so my spirits were hopeful.

" I am ringing about the message you sent on the 1st November" says he.

"Begorrer," thought I, "What kept you? It's only taken you thirteen days"

" Oh good." I said expectantly.

"I am afraid we did not get all your message," quoth he.

" Well why not? It was sent from your web site using your online form for these things."

"I can't tell you why, I only know we only got some of it."

So after my explaining it all again, and his going through the standard repertoir about filters, which browser, size of handkerchief, inside leg measurement, do you dress to the left or right, etc. he could not explain it. Furthermore he could do nothing about it "because everything checks out OK at this end."

The email connection speed improved a few days after I sent the message, with sometimes no delay, but I think another ISP would be in the offing if only we had a decent 'phone line into the exchange.
