freddie
Hi,I have Windows XP and need to set up password so that when switching on my laptop it always asks a password before starting. I have set up passwords in control panel - user accounts. There are three users: admin, user and guest. Guest is switched off and Admin and User are both password protected but having admin and user password protected didn't change anything. When I switch on the laptop I am not asked password and it goes straight into the area where all the programs are and where all work is done. Where do I go/what do I do to set up password? Please give step by step help. freddie
Hb_Kai
You probably have your current user account set to login automatically, in which case, would be a setting in the specific user account settings. Or maybe both.Have a look around the control settings to see if there is that option.

It seems the computer is set to logon automatically, or maybe for some reason the laptop is automatically logging on with the built-in Admin account that is usually hidden. To check this press Start then Run. Type in control userpasswords2 in the dialog box then click OK.In the Users tab that comes up you will see a list of all the users. This will include the hidden Admin account. Make sure there is a tick against Users Must Enter A User Name and Password To Use This Computer. If there isn't just click on it to put one there, then press OK. Don't change anything else in the user password dialog box.Shut down and re-start and you should be prompted for a password. Please report back what happens.
