Failed login to XP

I login to Windows, but it kicks me right back to the login screen. This does so for either my password protected login or my guest (no password) login.

No error message appears, or at least if it does occurs too fast to see.

I did just have a virus/adware issue which I haven't solved yet, so it may be that running SuperAntiSpyware "delete selected files" caused a problem with my Win XP SP 2 op sys. I also have AVGFree installed, but since it takes what seems DAYS to run a full scan, and doesn't allow you to perform any cleanup if you Stop it early, I haven't deleted any files using AVG yet.

I don't recall ever setting up to automatically generate Restore files (unless this is done automatically by Windows), and even if it/they exist, how could I run them since I can't even login?

When I boot in Safe mode, the same login problem occurs - identically to normal boot.

Any thoughts?

And if none of these work, and assuming you don't have a full back-up of your system, I think it's going to mean a re-installation of XP. I hope you have back-ups of all your important data files. If not, re-installation will try to save as many files as possible. Also make sure you do a straight re-installation without a reformat, then you can use a recovery program to recover your files (some) after the re-installation.

If you can't get into XP, try an .ISO recovery disc

Free Recovery Discs | TFC

But first you should try seeing if you can boot into safe mode with a command prompt and run system restore from there.

In the prompt, type:

 C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

and press Enter.

I'm working on creating the .ISO recovery disc at this time. I boot into safe mode with a command prompt, but for either rstrui.exe or drwtsn32.exe, I receive an "invalid command" response. Why?? Boy, do I miss DOS - things were so simple then.

Thanks for the help so far. I'll let you know how this goes.

A few months ago I tried to reinstall without a format Win XP without deleting the current one. I received (not quoted exactly) "new version differs from current version". All I've done since reformatting & intalling XP in the past - using this same original OEM install CD was to update to SP2, so why do I get the "different version" response? Thanks.

Maybe that's the command for Windows 2k or something else... sorry about the mistake.

Try

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Actually, I can see the file rstrui.exe in the directory, but it just won't execute. Is this because I'm not actualyy "in" XP, and I must be in order to execute the command? Thanks.

No. You are still in XP but in something similar to a sandboxed mode.

I don't know why it's not executing though. I don't really know much about the command prompt commands.

Maybe try putting

start %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

or

run %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

The only other thing I can think of is that you would need to be logged in to an administrator user account in safe mode?

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey, Guys, sorry so long in responding again. Investigated the ISO recovery disk idea. Problem was my CD drive has a hardware issue, and so is intermittent - in addition to the worm running in my XP installation.

Not sure how it finally came about (too long now to remember), but I was able to boot into Windows from the hard drive. But since my CD drive was funky, I couldn't boot from there to do a formatted XP reinstall. So I used a USB CD drive to reinstall XP. Any idea if you can make the USB CD drive your boot source? I wasn't able to do that.

Anyway, once I reinstalled XP (on top of the already-installed code), and used antivirus and adware to remove most of the offending programs, I've got a pretty good working system again. I made a restore disk ASAP.

Thanks for the help. :)
