Petrosky
My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium (64bit) on a HP HDX 18 Laptop. Trying to update software for a Fuji Fine PixS Digital camera has proved unsuccessful and thrown my system into the "flutters". Normally the graph in the Monitor lies between 8.75 - 9.5 (scale 1-10). While trying to update the Camera software it has plummeted to 4.1 with numerous errors and failures (yellow triangles, red crosses etc.) everywhere on a day's result. At one stage the PC froze and the "blue screen of death" appeared. :0 Below, I itemise the main reports appearing in it's report for the day of the crisis :- (1) Software Matters: USB\VID......................Driver install .........................failed WPDBUSENUMROOT\UMB..........................................stopped working (2) Applications : FinePixViewerS.exe (the camera).............................stopped working Quick DCF2.exe ......................................................stopped working (3) WINDOWS : Operating System ...................................................stopped working. failure (0x 0000007e) I have scanned for Spyware/Malware etc..nothing wrong there. Performed a System Health Report..that's o'kay and the PC is now running well. Thinking of a factory re-install to rebirth the whole system. Have I anything to worry about that might necessitate that ? Help appreciated.
Dencandy
As soon as your computer as booted use System Restore to put your system back to a date before this problem began. After that, check Device Manager to see if you have any problem hardware.

Do you mean doing a System Restore in the Safe Mode manner by tapping f8 at the outset ? Did check Device Manager..found nothing amiss. Thanks. andsome
I don't use any supplied software with my Olympus digital camera, even though it is supplied. When plugged in and switched on for the first time I see a message that new hardware has been detected. After a few seconds this is replaced with another message that the hardware has been installed and is ready for use. The camera shows up as a drive in windows explorer. I simply drag and drop the photos into a folder. There are now over 60 folders of photos. :D Try it. :D

I CAN load photos from the camera card however. I have discovered something very strange in all this. Going into Device Manager shows EVERYTHING that I plug into the USB port with the yellow warning triangle beside it. This applies to camera, printer, memory sticks and even the camera card. Acting on the advice of another contributor I DISABLED all these items in Device Manager and the yellow signs all disappeared and the requests for new software also. STRANGEST OF ALL .... the devices now all work perfectly in this mode. :( How strange :0 Many thanks.
Dencandy
My guess is then that there is a porblem with your USB connections but that somehow your system is coping with the situation so long as you disable the devices concerned. Regarding System Restore, this is accessed from Control Panel > Performance & Maintenance > System when you'll see System Restore as an option at the top.If I was you I'd take the computer to a technician to check the USB connections, they are sometimes a bit fickle.
