Page file space vs Virtual Memory

I do not quite understand your question; the pagefile is the virtual memory.

Oh I did not know that, I had a concern as it shows Page File Space to be larger than Available Virtual Memory.

I would like some help trouble shooting my computer, it is not running well. It has recently become slow to open up large image files, I have had blue screens crashes and programmes freeze.

I have defragmented, run CCleaner, AVG and Spy bot. No viruses showed up but still not running well.

Windows XP service pack 3

Hi Jacob,

This is more or less the problem you were complaining about back in June right ?

I wouldn't get too bogged down worrying about the pagefile if I were you. Perhaps a bit later you may wish to know more about it. Here is a good link: The Windows XP Page File

There are far too many variables with a computer to be able to diagnose the problems you are having from what you have described.

Bluescreens can be caused by poor Memory (RAM), Faulty or corrupted drivers, and a whole pile of other stuff.

Windows does suffer from registry deterioration after it has been in use for some time. (Registry cleaners and optimisers will not cure this, and nearly always make things worse)

Even when you are quite experienced with computers, sometimes it is far quicker to do a fresh install of Windows than to try to rectify a "tired" operating system.

Another alternative suggestion would be to try a Windows Repair.

Also, - test your memory (Plenty of free testers, just Google for them)

Ask yourself the question "Do I have enough memory installed ?"

Trying to read about your operating system and knowing how it works will give you a good foundation for the future.

Get a good operating system up and running, learn all about "Disk Imaging", Implement it, and you will have a fairly trouble free computing experience.

The only thing I'd add to MAMEMAN's excellent advice is to use the Event Viewer (from Control Panel > Administrative Tools) to try to find out a bit more about the cause of the problems you're having. There's a guide to how to use it from Microsoft here: LINK .

Sorry, links don't seem to be working with the new Forum layout. The address is: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427.

Hello

This is a really late, "thank you for your help". I have just had a re-instal of windows after a friend took a look and found the drivers partitions were showing to be set up incorectly (well I think that was what he said  ), the problems I mentioned did start to happen after installing a slave drive.

The fresh install cost me £25, seemed good to me, but then I do not know what is envolved. All running fine so far :paperbag1:

... Oh, well following this link for a clean install, it looks fairly straight forward. I must have completely over read this part of the post?

I will keep the link for next time.

Do you advise against using CCleaner then?
