Solid State Hard Drives

Recommended Posts

Im thinking about adding a SSD to my rig, has anyone here got one and if so what was the speed increase like?

Thanks

Hi There.

SSD's !!!! We are still on springs and rubber bands down here in Cornwall !

( No Rebel, I haven't got one.)

Price is very prohibitive at the moment (Average £250.00 + for a 160GB Intel) Cheaper around but are they "A" Graded ?

Manufacturers are playing the same game with these that they did with CPU's a year or two back ( Mines faster than yours - nuh !)

Unless you have got money to throw around I would wait a bit longer. Once they go mainstream with PC manufacturers the prices will plummet. (Same as DVD Re-Writers, Blu-Ray, etc; etc.)

As for speed ? There is always the classic subjective "perception" of feeling faster, and then the actuality of benchmarking for a true picture. Here are a few links to help you decide.

**Toms Hardware Benchmarks**

**Benchmark Reviews**

**Crunchgear**

You can buy and wear out quite a few SATA Drives for the price of a good SSD.

Best test ever is to get a mate to buy one first, and then see what you think. ;)

Hold on a bit longer. Someone on here might be using one.

I would like a SSD drive but I'm put off by the high price

I could imagine myself being a complete nervous wreck everytime I heard a rumble of thunder.

Earthing rods driven into the ground, lightning conductors running down the side of the house, mains stabilisers and "dirty" electricity smoothers. - Nah ! I'm too chicken for SSD's just yet. :P

Flash thumb drives pack up on me when I look at them funny !!

A few years back I can remember walking into someones repair workshop and seeing a great big pile of bust Fujitsu Hard Drives piled up in the corner. I expect Fujitsu told people at the time "Dont worry about a thing, - we are experts."

I'll let the price of SSD's come down, and other people blow 'em up for a couple of years first I think.

John.
