I'm usually pretty savvy in finding solutions for problems but with this i have hit a roadblock. I'm looking for an app that will emulate a floppy drive for a 64 bit system. It is a program the requires a dongle to activate. I have tried to copy it over manually but the application must see a floppy to copy from or it will not work and you can not change the format.I'm running windows 7 premium 64 bit and i have looked into VFD but it only runs on 32 bit.I have also looked into virtual machine but in order for it to install, i have to upgrade my windows to a higher grade. So no luck there as well.

Any ideas??

Thanks

Hi there, and Welcome.

Virtual Floppy Drive would probably suit your needs as it was/is open source. As far as I can remember somebody did write some 64-bit code for it. Have a search around the internet and see if it is still out there.

You would have probably been better going to an "Emulation Forum" (If there is such a thing) than an open forum when dealing with specific requirements. (Narrows the field of search)

Still any port in a storm I suppose. Good luck with your search.

(EDIT: Found it ! http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html#64bit)

Doesn't say it will run in Windows 7, but the source code is there, so it shouldn't present too much of a problem.

I'm guessing that all i will have to do is replace the old vfd.sys file with the new one??

No room for guesswork on this one. Get the shovel out and start digging around in the source code. "Igor Levicki" and "critical0" came up with the 64-bit code. The author is no longer developing it. It is all there on the webpage.

No gain without pain. :0

Good luck with this........ Looks as though it could turn into a PITA (Pain in the........)

Dont shoot the messenger. :)

i am wondering what is the significant of this "virtual floppy disk". Like why do you need it? :)

The way I read it, I reckon it's all to do with woggles and dongles, and the ability to have a left handed threaded nooper in case you get stuck in a roadblock.

That's ok with me........ I'm up for it. B)

Just as long as it's nothing to do with things that have a tendency to vibrate and are in the need of batteries to emulate a floppy. :)

You've been infected by the catgate affliction in record time

Nope.......doesn't vibrate. If it did it would be my wife's :censored:

Any kind of coding is Greek to me, i'm still trying to figure out what it means or even how to view it. The article says he did an edit on line 120

<<<<<<<<<"Third, x64 support is lacking, but not that

difficult to implement.

the driver builds well for AMD64 (i'm using winddk

3790.1830 for win 2003 server x64).

All I had to change was vfdioctl.c line 120 became :

(PULONG)&Irp->IoStatus.Information);

to fix up the warning about incompatible types.

I just switched driver to the one I've built and it

works perfectly.>>>>>>>>>

I found that in the vfd.sys that looks to be the updated one so like i said before, i figured it was a matter of overwriting the old with the new. I even tried to view it with notepad but is unreadable. What it almost sounds like is that all i have to do IS overwrite it but you still have to deal with the incompatibility window.

Like i said this is far and away from what I am used to doing.

Whatever people do in the privacy of their own computer.....................

I think that maybe complexity is one of the reasons that the original author of this software didn't bother to develop it any further.

John.
