Switched back to Zone Alarm Firewall

Recommended Posts

With all the hassles I have had lately leading to uninstalling and re installing programs galore - I got fed up with Comodo firewall which is really good but far too complicated and I could never find a tutorial on how to use it. So struggled on for over a year or so because ZA was a big download once it got sold.

So have it back on and it is working fine and does configure itself so you don't have that hassle. :D

Checking it today to see how it is going I noticed a learn more and went to their site -

site

And they say there is another firewall - I have just the free ZA firewall - and not a lot of idea what this extra bit does or even why you need it.

Anyone else have it and know what this means other than buy a bit more?

I run Avast SAS Pro and spyware blaster as protection and it works well on my XP Home SP3 and as well have boot MAM for checking on SAS. :D

In my opinion ZoneAlarm (free) is fine. I tried ZoneAlarm Pro a few months ago, and found it too complicated to use.

See this old post of mine how to uninstall the MailFrontier add-on on ZA 7. (I don't know if this thing is still bundled with ZA 8 and 9.)

Thanks Pat - opened Outlook - nothing except it asked for my user name and password as I changed it recently and haven't used outlook for a long time.

So maybe Mail Front not added any longer.

Also new look to installing it - more Checkpoint - who I take it are new owners - and didn't ask me re the security and anti virus which you always had to say no to etc. Was 38MB so had the lot in it anyway.

Which is what spoiled it in the first place.

Must Say I am finding it restful after Comodo which nags and nags and as I said very good

but you need to have done a programmers course and be Bill Gates to configure it and no tutorial.

Rong - perhaps you were wiser than I - who struggled on for so long!

  • 1 month later...

Hi back again - well I have now dumped ZA free as it was taking 3 minutes to start up even though on my Winpatrol Plus it is second in line if that counts at all.

everything else started up and no firewall - looked at the logs and no entries until 3 mins after the rest all calling home etc as traffic passing up and down on my DU Meter and anything could be calling in to do nasty things.........

Tried asking on their forum - got nowhere but a lecture and a list of programs that do not run well with it including Spybot which I dont run and nothing I run was on the list of not compatible.

Again problem seems to be in the fact that you cannot just get the firewall but have to take the whole security suite and it is this even though you say no that is reacting with some programs seemingly.

Did a google found a site which recommended Online Armour free and said that ZA is now well down the list at No 20 as letting in leaks(?) etc so good decision maybe. Matousse I think it was the tester.

anyway all going well to date and it loads quick smart and it is easy to use and friendly too - I liked Comodo but not easy. It has top rating for free BTW and Online armour free no2.
