I would like to buy a new CD from eBay with Windows XP Pro OEM by Dell. Would it be possible to install and activate it on my Acer??? Dencandy Posted January 16, 2010 Report Share Posted January 16, 2010 Be aware that a good proportion of the installation disks sold on ebay are not genuine, meaning you won't be able to get Microsoft updates, sevice packs, etc. If you do buy from ebay make sure the seller also includes the installation key (required to register it with Microsoft) and they give you a written statement that the disk is genuine. Even then there's no guarantee that it wall install on your Acer.Have you tried contacting Acer to see if they will sell you a replacement installation disk for the TravelMate? -pops- Posted January 17, 2010 Report Share Posted January 17, 2010 Be very careful about installing Dell software or hardware in a non-Dell machine.Dell are renowned for their non-standard equipment (for protectionist reasons) and it is quite likely that their versions of Windows are similarly non-standard and thus will not work in non-Dell machines.Assuming your Acer is new, why spoil it by using cheap (possibly pirate or otherwise substandard) software?Another thing is : why do you want to install an obsolescent operating system? There are two more recent versions of Windows available now.I want a Windows XP Pro, because I work with specific software, like sound and video programs and they work best with Windows XP as far as I know. For example, I have been in many studios and if they work with PC, I have never seen any other OS on their machines than XP.Also I strongly believe after year or so, i will change my Acer PX to something more powerful, so it is very important that I could use same CD to install my new machine.So I want to find out which version of XP Pro I need, either Retail or genuine. Thing is, that I cannot find a place where to buy XP pro Reatil version. Some distributors suggested me to buy Windows 7 Pro and then downgrade to XP, but I still have to find out if there is no other solution. But as far as I have found out, it's very difficult to find new Win XP Pro Retail version, so the only way will be to buy Windows 7 (that I will never need) and downgrade to XP.
