I tried the backup system included with Windows 7 and after an inordinately long time with it apparently achieving nothing, gave up and reverted to Acronis which I have used for many years with no complaints.

1TB will take a while to complete and an external drive linked by SATA will cut the time down appreciably over a USB transfer.

In another thread Click here I detailed the results of copying of a large file from one hard drive to another.

I achieved a transfer rates of :-

66 GB/sec copying frome one internal SATA drive to another

63 GB/sec copying from an internal drive to an external SATA drive via an eSATA connection

28 GB/sec copying from an internal drive to an external SATA drive via a USB2 connection

Like pops - I tried the Microsoft backup facility in Windows 7 64 bit but found it to be very slow. After about 4 hours I decided that life is too short to wait for it to complete and I abandoned the trial.

I continue to use my old favourite - Acronis.
