Mygnuid Posted March 13, 2010 Report Share Posted March 13, 2010 My computer survived a power surge that took out two other computers in my home network, however, several minor problems have shown up since that may be related to that surge. Since Windows XP-SP2 will no longer be supported soon, I am trying to get SP3 installed. Service Pack 3 downloads completely, but near the end of install, it is denied. Can I install Windows XP from the original disk and follow up with Service Pack 3 and expect everything to be complete? It seems that something is corrupted or missing that is needed for the SP3 install as is. Is it necessary to uninstall Win XP before, or will the new installation go right over the original? andsome Posted March 13, 2010 Report Share Posted March 13, 2010 If you have a proper installation disc there will be no problem in reinstalling Windows. Make sure that the computer will boot from CD and insert it into the drive and re-boot. It has been sometime since I installed XP, but from memory, click on format first and let it delete the contents of the hard drive, then do a fresh set up. Before doing anything, save as much as possible to another hard drive or CD. Make sure you have all passwords etc. When you boot up from the CD, the computer will want to go to the update page, and will download XP 3. -pops- Posted March 13, 2010 Report Share Posted March 13, 2010 andsome is correct but what concerns me is your statement that the machine has survived a power surge that knocked out two other machines.I would strongly advise getting the machine professionally checked over to ensure there aren't any hidden faults. There are hundreds of passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors) in a computer as well as numerous microcircuits and other semiconductors all of which are essential to the proper running of the machine.Let us know how it goes.
