Ultimate Windows Tweaker

This applies only to Vista and Windows 7 - both 32 bit and 64 bit.

I have been using a little Windows tweaking programme for a couple of weeks now and it has proved to be very useful. In the "good" old XP days you sould use TweakUI but I am not aware that MS have an equivalent for Win7

Two of the most useful tweaks for me have been :-

* On the desktop - eliminate the little arrows on desktop shortcuts

* In Windows Explorer - show the drive letter before the label

Many of the so-called tweaks are already buried somewhere in the menu system or are exe files in Windows - but this little programme gathers them up and presents them in an easy format.

If you do that, then how do you distinguish between desktop shortcuts and genuine desktop items (like 'My Computer' or 'Recycle Bin' etc.), or actual files on the desktop?

I don't need to - the icon label tells me what it is.

I use desktop icons as an easy means of opening programmes, web pages and documents etc. I create some of my own icons using a great little programme called IcoFX (Download link) and the shortcut arrow is often a "spoiler".

Don't place too much emphasis on the little arrows - there's a lot more to the tweaker than that.

Looking at the window shown on the page, I can't see much that would be an advantage. For one thing, in Windows Explorer the drive letter show after the arrow, but so what. I think I'll pass.cool.gif
