Hi all, I have an important document. It was written in Thai. Then it was opened and saved on a computer with does not have a thai caharcter set. So it has al been converted to western characters. Is there some way/program how I can get a back to original? (my PC does have a thai character set). I do not want to type the whole document over on a english/thai keyboard. Thanks for any tips.

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

What kind of document is it - a Word (.doc) file?

Word can recognize character sets when importing data, e.g. opening a text (.txt) file, it may also ask you to specify the character set if it is unclear.

It is a txt file. But is now in western characters. But with no meaning to the "words". But if I would type the same western characters on my keybard while it is set to Thai, I would get back the original text in thai. But it will take days. That is the problem. Any good idea?

Thanks for the nice suggestions but they will not work. Because the document only contains meaningless "words" in western characters without any reference to thai. When you put that in a translation program, it can do nothing with it.

And no, cutting and pasting also does not help. Maybe most of you are not familiar with a multi script keyboard.

There are characters of both scripts on every key. The language the keyboard "uses" when you type is decided on how you put a (software) switch.

To give you an idea:if i set the keyboard to english and i type

car

and when i set iy to thai and press the same keys i get

แฟพ

(most of you will not be able to read this because you don't have the right character set installed).

So what i need is some kind of program what looks up the value of the key in english, and then replaces it with the same value in thai.

So it has al been converted to western characters.

Just to make it clear: the original Thai text has not been "translated" to English, as some of the posts seem to assume, but the original Thai multi-byte characters have been lost, and have been saved as useless singlebyte characters - is that correct?

If so, you can easily get the original back with Word; do you have Microsoft Word installed, or available on any computer?

Start Word, then open that text file; Word will ask you what character set the text contains. Select Thai, and you will have your original text back. Save it as a Word document (.doc); if you save it as a text document (.txt), make sure you save it as Unicode UTF8 to preserve the multibyte characters.

Let us know how it goes.
