cliftonbazaar Posted March 21, 2010 Report Share Posted March 21, 2010 I have a computer that used to be my Windows2003 server computer, this worked well until I created another computer with Linux to be the server (please, no windows V Linux discussions).So now I wanted to install Windows XP on the computer and give it to another family member - but for some reason when I installed the windows XP (Legal version!) on the computer it would get to the part were I am given the option on which partition to put XP - but then the computer simply reboots!!So I thought it was a faulty hard drive so I tried to install LINUX on it - success! Then I went to put XP over linux and it keeps rebooting when I am at the option of which partition to put XP.So then I installed Windows 2000 on the computer - no problems!!! Windows XP still wouldn't install, so I loaded win2k and tried to upgrade the computer to XP - but it still reboots during the install session!Note that I have 2 XP discs and get the same problems no matter which one I use.Please note that it is the same hard drive that was running win 2003 server for 3 years, it only has one partition and can run both linux and win2k. The norm was to install XP first then other operating systems afterwards.Try connecting the drive to another machine and carry out a full reformat before the XP install (in the original machine). cliftonbazaar Posted March 23, 2010 Author Report Share Posted March 23, 2010 I formatted the HD in NTFS from win2k; now it has win2k installed but XP won't go over it - simply reboots during partition. The HD is not SATA.Note that I formatted the HD on a different computer.I put another HD in the computer and had the same problems - so now I believe that it might be a BIOS problem - searching Google now. -pops- Posted March 23, 2010 Report Share Posted March 23, 2010 Isn't there a contradiction here?You state in your post #3 that you "gave it a complete format" yet in post #5 it says "now it has win2k installed but XP won't go over it". Is that really the case? If so, read my post (#2) where you will see that I suggest a full reformat of the drive - that is to say, remove all data and partitions. cliftonbazaar Posted March 23, 2010 Author Report Share Posted March 23, 2010 UPDATE: While watching XP install I noticed that when it came to the options for setting up XP on which partition that I had 5 seconds before it rebooted (and no more than 5 seconds, literally). So I quickly hit ENTER, F8 and then ENTER to set it up - and it successfully installed itself.So now I have XP installed - but no idea what was causing the problem :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
