Retrieving Windows.old files

I recently installed Windows 7 on my desktop machine that previously had XP. I had Microsoft Word 2003 installed before my new installation and I was wondering if I will need to acquire a new copy of Word or if I can somehow use the files that are located in my Windows.old folder. I do not have the original discs.

If not, what is the purpose of Windows retaining all the old program files in this folder if they are essentially worthless on the upgraded operating system?

Not sure if this will work but, it's worth a try if you don't want to re-install Office 2003.

Open Office is a comprehensive office suite which is compatible with MS Office. Hopefully it will be able to retrieve your old files. You may want to keep it installed as an MS Office alternative.

The best thing is that it's entirely free.

I successfully use some of the programs shown in Windows Old. It's worth a try. Some of course will not run.
