Annoying Vista popup

Recommended Posts

I seem to have imported a popup entitled "Browserchoice.exe"

does anyone know how to get rid of it as it will not let me delete it - "Access denied"

I have tried as administrator with the same result.

I have tried to change the permissions also with same result.

I have also gone thru <cmd> and tried to delete in dos but no joy "Access denied"

It resides in the system32 folder..

This is a legitimate Microsoft program installed in a recent update.

It automatically opens a window giving you a choice of browsers. Once you have selected your choice the program should not run again.

There is plenty of information about this pop up if you Google "Browserchoice.exe"

I find that it is possible to delete the icon called browserchoice.exe from the desktop - but deleting the actual file from the System32 folder in Windows 7 is quite another matter.

If I try to delete the file using Windows Explorer I get an error message which says "You require permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to this file". I have not found a way to delete it - even safe mose fails.

However, I am not really bothered about deleting the file because it no longer pops up and asks me to run it (I selected IE8 as my choice and it seems to have shut it up). I only tried out of curiosity after seeing andsome's post.

On my friends computer I deleted it just on the desk top, to avoid the irritation it was causing her. She is already using IE8, I put it on the computer for her some time ago. I did not check for folders elsewhere.smile.gif

In so doing you did not delete the file - but just deleted the desktop shortcut.

The OP was looking to delete the file - not a shortcut to it.

I assume that your friend was no longer getting pop-ups after confirming her choice of IE8 - but was left with the dormant desktop icon as an irritation.
