External hard drive

Heya,

This may well be in the wrong category but hopefully someone can help.

I have an external hard drive which is the hard drive of my old laptop. I wanbt to delete off all the folders so that I can use it as my backup drive but the folders are protected and I can't delete them. It was all set up by a friend years ago and I'm not technologically savvy enough to know how to do it.

I've tried to change the adminstrator rights to take ownership of the folders (?) but I still couldn't delete them, not sure if this is because I was maybe doing it wrong.

I've done the windows key then R and then typed in cmd but then I don't know what to type in as the location of the folders I want to delete.

Can someone please give me some tips in laymans terms?!

If this is an external drive it should show up in My Computer, if you right click the drive letter (the one for the external drive) and left click format, that will wipe the drive.

make sure of course if offered a choice that you select NTFS.B)

You can also use the windows drive manager.

Just right click on My Computer and click manage. then click on Disk Management. You should be able to do a full format from there.

You can change administrator permission for those protected files.for this assistance follow those steps:

1 Right-click the file that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.

2 Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).

3 Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

4 In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK.

My internal hard drive not working. i want to attach external hard drive. Some one that have experience about this. Guide me how to attach external hard drive and how to start working.

You cannot have an external drive operating without an internal one.
