Knowing that the holiday cottage lacked a broadband connection – I bought a Vodafone pay as you go mobile dongle to test the practicality of this type of connection. At home I use my computer to research places to visit – using of course the web and Google Earth. Once we find a location of interest I download the coordinates to my Sat-Nav to facilitate finding the place.This is the first time I have used the Netbook on a UK driving holiday so before I left home I loaded it with Google Earth – but didn't actually try it out.Sods law struck with a vengeanceGoogle Earth will not work on my Netbook because it requires a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768 and my Netbook is 1024 x 600.The mobile broadband dongle is almost a waste of time and money. I tried it at various locations in Cornwall and the connection speed was consistently rubbish. About the same speed as I recall dial up was. It took about a minute to load the BBC News page and a 2 MB attachment to an Email took 13 minutes to download. Viewing video on the BBC News site was impossible – as was watching any You Tube links.However – given time - I was able to view and send Emails and look at the Forum.The Netbook was still useful to sync with my Sat Nav – but next time I will go back to using BT hot spots or a hotel WiFi network Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I could buy a local PAYG sim whichever country I am in, and the charges would not be so enormous as the roaming charges by UK providers.
