kulgirl
Can anybody offer any suggestions? My internet connection is strong but it keeps disconnecting/connecting on my desktop every few seconds. No problem with laptop connection, so I'm thinking it must be my desktop which is a Sony Vaio, Windows xp, 2gb ram, pentium 4.
bludgard
Hi,kulgirl.Welcome.Can you open device manager to see if anything is amiss? You may see something like this: Check hidden devices as well.
kulgirl
The only thing that is not working is the Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter under Network Adapters and I don't know what that is.
bludgard
The only thing that is not working is the Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter under Network Adapters and I don't know what that is.kulgirl, are you comfortable with registry editing? The reason why I ask is because there are no global solutions to this issue that I can find. And the one solution I did find seems to be quite involved. First, though,I would sggest you visit Microsoft Support:HERE to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).There are options to automatically reset, and a manual method.Try this, and if the problem still exists,we will delve deeper. ;)

kulgirl
Thanks so much for your help, bludgard. Unfortunately, neither the automatic or the manual fix worked, so I guess the next step is to edit the registry. I've done it before, but it's been years since I did, so I can't say I'm comfortable with it. Funny thing is, this problem with jumping on and off the internet happens intermittently. Right now everything is fine, but I know the problem will happen again, maybe in a couple of hours or a couple of days.
MANEMAN
Can I just jump in and make a suggestion before you get tied up in the registry ?" Winsock Repair" - it is portable, and freeware. - Yes folks it's FREE !"Winsock Repair is a portable software program for the Windows operating system that has two primary functions. The first is to reset the TCP/IP stack which will rewrite important Windows Registry keys with their default values. The second will try to repair Winsock so that the network connectivity issues are a thing of the past. It does provide an option to list the installed LSPs (Layered Service Providers) which can be important as pre-installed LSPs might need to be reinstalled after fixing the Winsock errors."Installation:"Winsock Repair is very simple utility and, for this reason, does not demand any installation utility. Simply unzip all files to any folder and run the executable file (usually, "WinsockRepair.exe")."The website is here: http://www.rizonetech.com/Or you can do a direct download from here: http://www.rizonetech.com/?download=winsrepair.zipJohn.REMINDER: Before anyone starts altering registry settings they should make a "Registry Backup". This can be done from within Windows or with something like the amazing *ERUNT*If installed correctly ERUNT will make an automatic backup of your registry on a daily basis. - And yes it works on Windows 7 also. :)
MANEMAN
Us "Techie" people always like to jump in at the deep end, strut about, throw our chests out, and display our knowledge and skills. B)Especially when the forum name of the person ends in "Girl" Comin' right back down to basics for a minute here. A lot of the stuff you are describing on your Sony Vaio could be down to a twitchy and corrupted "Firewall"Choose a fairly safe website, ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/ ) turn the firewall "off", leave the computer running for a few hours whilst refreshing that home page from time-to-time, and see if the problems still occur. It wouldn't be the first time a firewall has caused this sort of problem. (Do make sure that you only have one firewall running.)John.

kulgirl
Thanks so much, Maneman, I will definitely try the firewall first, as soon as the problem starts up again. There is no predicting when it will occur, only that it will happen within the next day or so. If that doesn't work, I will attempt the "Winsock Repair" next. I'll keep you posted.Kulgirl
kulgirl
Since I couldn't uninstall the Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter, the only solution was to remove it from the registry. I went edit and did a "find" and then deleted the entry. Hopefully that has solved the problem. We will see if it happens again, but I couldn't determine any need for this network adapter so deleting it did no harm.
kulgirl
I guess the Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter was not the problem, since I'm falling off the internet again!
MANEMAN
Try "Winsock Repair" then, and let us know if that fixes it./>http://www.rizonetech.com/?download=winsrepair.zipJohn.
kulgirl
Hi Maneman, I did the Winsock Repair yesterday afternoon and my internet hasn't fallen off since. Yay! Hopefully that has solved the problem. I backed up the registry first, created a restore point and then reset the TCP/IP Stack and voila! Thank you so much. This problem has been plaguing me for months. It used to happen occasionally, then more often and recently, every day. I've got my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again. You are the mane man! MANEMAN
Kulgirl, thank you for the reply. Others with a similar problem in the future may just be able to look back through the archives, and find the help they need based on your feedback.Years ago, I was the only person in our rural area who had drain rods. - And it became known. Very soon people would start ringing up and saying "We hear that you are the main man in the area with knowledge of drains" - "Could you perhaps....................... ?Big joke in the family, and for years I had the email address "Manemanq12@blahblahblah"I kept that address up until such a time that I upset a religious group of people on the internet one evening with my strange sense of humour. They didn't find what I said the slightest bit funny, found out my email addy, and came gunnin' for me. I closed that account down darn quick, but I still to this day use "MANEMAN" for a few things.A bit of a stinky sewerage type little story I know, but very true.I digress as usual, but some of these little anecdotes make forums more real, the people on them more human and approachable when it come to technical issues..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.Let us hope that "Winsock" has solved the problem for you. I have used it in the past to good effect. You now know that you can come back here anytime and get help with just about anything, - except clearing your drains. :P John.
