Upgrading to Win 7?

Hi,

I'm thinking about upgrading to Win7, however unsure about a few points:

1. I have Windows XP Pro, can I upgrade to Win7 Home Premium or only to Win7 Pro?
2. What "kind" of WinXP do I need? I can activate it just fine and all, its not a "real" WinXP though (or atleast the CD says "business desktops", "Only for use with restore CD", "Only for distribution with business desktops", well it works fine and can be activated (although after activating it a couple of times i usually have to phone their support/telephone activation because it says it was used too often (like when reintalling). Then I can use it again though for a while

It is not possible to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP - you have to do a clean install. Google is your friend..............

It is however possible to carry out a full install of Windows 7 using upgrade media - I have done it successfully on three machines. Microsoft have built the feature into the new OS to enable you to install Windows 7 on a machine formerly loaded with XP. You will have to reinstall all your software and data and set up your system afresh - you cannot transfer your settings easily.

Well yeah with "Upgrade" I meant buying the Upgrade Version instead of the full one, not if I have to reinstall all of it or not ;D

Just a bit worried if my XP Pro can be upgraded to Win7 Home Premium, some people in chat said they don't know if that works, and some think it can be only upgraded to Win7 Pro, other articles say you can upgrade to any Win7 version if you have any XP version

These are very similar,- well.......exactly the same as the ones given by AlanHo actually, but changing the format can make things a little more comprehensible for certain people at times. Within those articles you will find other links that will probably guide you straight to the root of your question.

I repeat.

You cannot upgrade from XP to Windows 7 and keep your settings.

You have to do a clean install - which will wipe your XP partition if you install on the same volume.

You do not need to buy a full retail copy of Windows 7 - you can use an upgrade disc following the instructions I posted above. It's fiddly - but it works - and saves you money.

Make sure you save all your data to another drive so that you don't lose it.

I repeat - you cannot upgrade XP to Windows 7 irrespective of the versions - you must do a fresh install.
