sasman32 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Share Posted July 30, 2010 Hi I have a windows 7 Laptop with virtual PC installed, I have an XP machine installed, I attempted to install a Vista Machine but get this error message attached. My .vhd file is installed on my network drive but that should not make a difference should it?I have attached a screenshot If someone can point in me the right direction in the meantime I am going to remove the machine on my network drive and install on the C driveThanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Here we go.Firstly of course make sure that in the BIOS the CD/DVD Drive is first in line in boot order. As you already have XP installed on the VM I would think that this is the case anyway.You are not the only one who has this problem. Evidently the VM doesn't like booting from a Vista "DVD" and you have to find another way around it.I am not going to pretend to be a great technical genius. Just copy and paste a few things that hopefully will get you on your way as quickly as possible.Hope it is of some use to you sasman.Others may be along with answers when they fall out of bed. :P ;) John..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.I had trouble booting a VM from the host physical CD drive when the disk was a DVD. Since it would anyway be very slow I gave up and I *never* use the physical drive anymore. I always make an ISO from any disk I need to access from the VM and then I capture the ISO file into the emulated optical drive in the VM. This always works and is quite fast too..=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.= From the text drop down list: CD | Use physical drive Choose your drive. After the first reboot during the install process you will have to go to the same place, but this time remove physical drive. Then the remainder of the setup process will run from the virtual drive. I had read in a different thread somewhere about making sure the physical drive is set to autoplay. I checked the settings and it seems that mine was not. I changed the setting for DVD movie (I was using the Vista DVD) to autoplay and like magic it worked! Hope this helps anyone else having this problem! I just asked Virtual PC to create windows vistaI think my laptop does check the CD first anyway Do you think it would help If I get a copy of Vista and use that insteadOtherwise I have heard that there is no MBR in that copy of the VHD. Your computer hasn't got it. :0 )Microsoft aint gonna give you a free copy of Vista just because you have downloaded their Virtual Machine. They aint gonna make any money that way.With a barebones computer (No operating system at all) You have to supply the operating system. - Virtual Machine no different.Do you think it would help If I get a copy of Vista and use that insteadIn view of what I have just said, I see that as a fairly major requisite. :)You should leave any further questions here on the forum on hold for a couple of weeks until you have updated yourself on Virtual Machines and the general technology surrounding VM's. Expect any such questions to "probably" be ignored if the information required can be found quite easily by "Search Engine". (I will for one, ignore you until you have updated yourself on VM's.
