"Properties" dialogue states I'm using 46GB on C Drive; Fi

Recommended Posts

Title says all. [EDIT: no it doesn't, sorry. see below.] What the heck, guys? I understand there may be some calculation discrepancies, but a 14GB difference?

Restated, if I right click on Drive C and click properties, I am told that used space is 46.0GB. If I select all the files and folders on Drive C, including hidden files/folders, the "Size on Disk" is 32.1GB. How is the rest of the space being consumed?

Thanks in advance for your wisdom :)

This may be due to the way GB is defined by the different systems in your machine.

A gigabyte, on the binary system (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 etc.) is 1073741824 Bytes. There is another system used (SI) in which a gigabyte is 1000000000 bytes.

As you will see, there is a considerable difference between the two, 73741824 Bytes in fact, and on larger drives the difference is even greater.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte for a more detailed explanation.
