security essentials starts avalanche of windows automatic updates

Installed microsoft security essentials this morning and shortly thereafter started getting automatic update notices by the score - starting with service pack 3, 2, and even 1 plus any number of updates for microsoft office, etc. As we have been updating all along {currently have ver 5.1 (build 2500.xpsp_sp3_gdr.100216-1514:service pack 3) installed and all updates for office, etc. issued before today), wonder what's going on and more importantly how to stop it.

Is this the first time you installed MSE?

If so,I would let it be-unless of coarse it is causing problem....

;)If I am not too far off base,I would venture to say that MSE has their own updates for MS produdcts.

It looks like you have previously only beeen using Windows Update

rather than Microsoft Update ?

If so that would explain the sudden upsurge of Office Service Packs/security updates in addition to those for MSE itself.

well, no have been updating all installed windows and microsoft products for years - even if it was trying to do office updates only, why would it want to reinstall sp1, 2, and 3? and yes these appear to be the standard windows xp sp1, 2, and 3 that predate the existence of security essentials so unless bill and mr. peabody finally got that wabac machine working again, it would appear unlikely that updates from several years ago would exist for a new package. in any case, why would anyone be so stupid to name their updates to a new package the same as for another product - wouldn't that be incredibly confusing, install sp 3, okay did that and nothing happened, did you install sp 3 for security essentials, no i installed it for windows, wait maybe you should install sp 3 for microsoft powerpoint....geez. so no cigars (man if you guys work for microsoft, then they are in trouble). now just for grins, i did finally let it install an old update for microsoft office (a small one, even i'm not dumb enough to let it start rolling through sp3 again). it appeared to get confused for a moment and then skipped to the end - possibly figured out that it had already been installed. this seemed to stop the avalanche, so maybe this initiated a call to mother that all of these old updates had been installed (i have no idea how ms set up this process - if local machines querry a database somewhere or what or vice versa, i try not to think too much about such orwellian matters) - no more messages have been received since. if anyone from ms ever reads this message and has an answer, i'd love to hear it.

p.s. it would be great if there is a log somewhere that lists what updates have been automatically done to this computer over the years and when they were done - if there is point away...it should would simplify answering whether an update is actually needed or not.

p.p.s. yes, also kind of figured that security essentials was doing whatever it was doing independently of the regular updater (which is what the last guy's link appeared to say too) - so why it would wipe out what the regular updater's history was is a mystery (there's got to be a memory somewhere - otherwise you'd be continually bugged to install sp3 again and again).

uh, yes. having ms loading and installing updates (including sp 1, 2, and 3) going back for the past several years would be more than a bit disruptive, especially if it wants to restart the computer after each one!

Go to Microsoft Windows Update http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Options

look at "Review your Update History" and go through the pages - will give you all the dates/times.

There is: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log (%WINDIR% usually is C:\Windows).

I do not work for MS-or anyone else for that matter.

I would like to say that if I ran a security company,I would let very few people in on how System Operations sre executed.

My accounts either trust me to protect them,or they find someone that they feel more comfortable with.There is of course a third option;Create one's own defence system.

I don't care for the big brother issue either,so I keep all my intimate info out of my PC.One can ALWAYS look into your vitual world if one has a mind to.Make no mistake about that.

I've used MSE for about 9 months now and it runs seamless with my OS and apps.After the initial install,you will not know it's there unless it encounters an intruder or updates itself.

I've used paid AV/AS and quite frankly,I prefer MSE.

Sounds like a sales convention.

Only options I see for OP is to either uninstall MSE,let it run it's course,or seek support MSE Support.The only way to disable updates to MSE that I know is to uninstall it or maybe turning Automatic Update completely off.I think I tried that before-disableing Win AU-and I think MSE still updated.Maybe there's some reg tweak.

Theres threads all over the net about this....

If I don't like the way a product runs it's gone to the dump.
