Sound problems with Windows 7 and P5N-E SLI Motherboard

Hello.

Recently I found that my microphone did not work with Windows 7. It was if it wasn't detected at all. As a solution I tried downloading new audio drivers to remedy the problem. This however, spawned a new problem, no audio at all.

Down in the right hand side of the screen, an audio symbol with a red cross appears. If I hover the mouse over it, it says "No audio output device installed" (Mine is in Norwegian, but I think that's roughly what it is translated into)

If I press the audio symbol with an x over it, Windows searches for problems, It says that The sound is deactivated, and that It did not solve the problem.

This happens if I have Windows' automatically installed drivers (Windows update) or if I am using Realtek's drivers. (I have tried a multitude, both from realtek's site and asus)

If I enter sound options in control panel and try to change standard sound output it won't let me, I cannot deactivate anything there either.

I have tried deactivating and activating audio in device manager to no avail and have restarted the services Windows audio and Windows audio endpoint, which were running and are set to start automatically.

I have also tried using realtek's audio manager to try to see if that works.

All the time I have been running the administrator account and have run programs as administrator.

The hardware is working, I have verified it by testing on another machine, The sound card is enabled in bios, the front panel on my tower is connected to the motherboard and audio settings for the front panel are set to ac97 in bios.

The specs of my machine are

Operating system: Windows 7 Premium 64 bit (6.1 Build 7600)

Motherboard: Asus P5N-E SLI

Ram: 4096 MB

Processor: Intel Core 2 Cpu 6600 @ 2.4 ghz

I am really at my wit's end here. And hoping that I don't have to reinstall windows just to get the sound working again.

Any help is much appreciated.

Which connectors are you using? The ones on the mother board at the back of the box or the ones on the front of the box?

Some motherboard disconect the rear ones if the front ones are connected, and obviously unless the front ones are not connected internally they will not work.

Hey. Thanks for the reply.

I have connected the front panel to the motherboard, but I am using the back panel, stereo jack plugged to my speakers. This configuration worked until i installed the new drivers. If I have nothing connected at the back-panel the small error symbol with the red cross in the lower right corner says "No headphones or speakers plugged in" when i connect the speakers it goes back to saying "no output device"

Check to see if there is a BIOS update for your mother board.

Also, uninstall any drivers that you have installed and let windows install the Microsoft drivers for it, I have found that the MS drivers work better for the generic internal cards with Windows 7.

Also go into the BIOS and verify that the on board sound didn't get turned off for some reason.

I have Flashed the BIOS to the latest version (Which probably fixed a lot of other issues), Tried enabling and disabling the sound card in BIOS to allow my Mia midi PCI sound card to be the standard device, which did not work either. The windows standard drivers and drivers that windows finds does not work.

The volume didn't get turned down to almost nothing did it?

Try deleting the sound card from the device manager then reboot and let it reinstall the drivers.

Have already done so, a number of times, in all concievable combinations. The sound is non-existing, not just very low.

If there is an option for this:

Have you right-clicked on the speaker icon in tray and went through all options there?There's lots to browse through.Just to rule out a possible configuration issue.

Right click speaker icon and select recording devices.Click on the microphone icon and select properties.Pay particular attention to any "disabled" content.

Yep, I have tried all those things. I cannot disable enabled units or enable disable ones-

Doubt there is a config issue, even if it were the "configure" option also does nothing.

I take it you do not have recovery media at hand?Such as sytem images?

Run a system health report:Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Performance Information and Tools.Advanced Tools.Look at the top of the page for any that may appear and click to browse issues if any.

On the same page,select Create a System Health Report at the bottom and see what is revealed there.

Maybe run system file checker:sfc/scannow from an elevated command promp.

And there is always the option for a repair install.

If all else fails,clean install.

If your motherboard is at fault,most likely none of this will help.

Hey.

I have not saved an image to recover to.

In the health report, nothing of interest came up.

As of now there seems to me to be only two options, unless I magically stumble upon a way to fix it.

Either buy a cheap pci sound card with a minijack interface and try to get that to work or reinstall windows 7 on a rainy day.

Thanks for all the help, and I hope that people with the same problem who read this post are luckier than me. I've read several places that other people have similar

problems. If it's a windows 7 compatability or driver issue I hope it's fixed in an upcoming patch.

Since the only thing I did to trigger it was to update my drivers. I will be wise and create a recovery next time around. I will post any progress here.

Have you tried rolling back the updated drivers to a point where the issues were not present?

When I tried that i could not roll back that far in time. I had tried to reinstall too many times.

I have just been using my laptop for sound purposes since.

Have to format my c drive on a rainy day when nothing else happens.

I have concluded that some residual files must be causing the conflict.

I believe that my problem has been subject to a fair amount of bad luck.

Though I have read that many other people also have similar problems.
