Vista Desktop Icons Won't Stay Where I Put Them

I have a Sony VGN-Z laptop running Vista Business SP2. I have most of my desktop icons on the left side of the screen and selected ones on the right. These are things like shortcuts to specific folders. The right hand side icons will stay put until the laptop restarts after a shut to or a restart command.

After Vista loads, all of the icons are back on the left side. How do I get the selected ones to stay put on the right side just like they do on my XP Pro PC's? If I right click on the Vista desktop, and highlight "View", "Classic Icons", "Align to Grid" and "Show Desktop Icons" are all checked. Any help with this frustrating issue will be appreciated. The solution does not appear to be intuitively obvious; but then I may be blind. Thanks in advance.

Is Auto arrange ticked? If yes, try an un-tick

Thanks, a good try, but auto arrange is not ticked. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this.

I had another posting recently to fix Vista folder views, and it was not fixed by ticking or un-ticking a few selections. It took quite a bit of registry surgery after Boris pointed me in the right direction. I suspect that for the desktop icon fix, I may also have to take the scalpel to the registry in the O.R. :(

Peter.

Unticking "Auto Arrange" does not fix it. I have a work-around using third party software which when I restart the laptop, and then do a "Shift+Right Cick" on the desktop, I can select "Restore Icon Positions." But a permanent fix would be better. Thanks.

PS, tried to get to this forum for a few days, but kept getting a message that the site had used up all it's bandwidth.
