crockfpj
I've just tried to use Windows Movie Maker for the first time. I attempted to import some video miles (mp4 format) into Movie Maker by clicking and dragging the files into Movie Maker. Movie Maker then froze (this after about 20 minutes of doing nothing) and I had to close Movie Maker by ending the program using Task Manager. When I went back to the file from which I'd done the click and drag, the mp4 files were no longer there - and I could not find them anywhere on the PC by searching using Windows Explorer. Can anyone tell me how I might recover these files - or are they lost forever? Any help much appreciated!
-pops-
As a first go, try a System Restore to a time before this happened.System Restore doesn't normally affect your own files but as there appears to be something more drastic happened, you may be lucky.I never use the "click and drag" as I'm always wary of a problem like you are experiencing. I use the copy facility and if something goes wrong you should have the original file still there.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Try Recuva on the original file location.
crockfpj
Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried System Restore & Recuva (intriguing tool!) but neither have been successful Any other ideas?
-pops-
Odd that the files have completely disappeared.Have you looked in the Recycle Bin?
crockfpj
It was the first place I looked - but the files were not there. I did not actually delete them, they just seemed to vanish when Movie Maker froze.
Dencandy
Windows Movie maker cannot handle MP4 files. First you have to convert them to a format that MM can handle, such AVI, WMV. My guess is there'd eventually be a degradation in quality. It's best to use video editing software specifically aimed at the MP4 format - but I'm not an expert can't recommend one.If Recuva can't find your files, then they are almost certainly permanently lost - probably overwritten by some sudsequent process.Do you still have the original MP4 source files so you can start afresh? crockfpj
Thanks for the information re converting from MP4 format. Does this require specialist software?Unfortunately the source files are gone & it looks like lost forever.
