HP Mini 110-1020nr

Hello all, I am having a heck of a time trying to repair an HP mini netbook. Scenario: Netbook started having problems, when it would freeze on startup. All that would appear on the screen was the windows XP loading screen(no activity on the loading bar). I first tried all possible recovery partition options that I could think of. The most I ever got was to a safe mode selection screen. After trying several different windows installation discs, including one from HP for the netbook, to no avail. I decided to format the drive in another computer and try again. Also, I ran PC-check hardware diagnostics to make sure that was not the problem. It came back with no problems. Now, when I try to install windows XP, it hangs at the "starting windows" dialog. If I enter safe mode, it hangs on disk.sys every time. I'm at my wits end, am thinking about trying to install Ubuntu to see if that will at least work. Please help. I apologize If i have not been specific enough, as this is my first post. Thank you. :-D

I appreciate your response Alan. However, I have tried everything that I saw on that website. I have the original Recovery discs, among other windows installation discs. All of them are legitimate copies from Microsoft or HP. Also, this model seemingly had no recovery partition, as I was able to find very little information about one, and no combination of recovery boot keys produced anything. I now have a blank hard drive in the computer. I have also replaced the hard drive with another one, but have had no success.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I am unable to get to a point where windows will install. I am thinking that I may have a bad motherboard, or component on the motherboard that is messing everything up. Even though, the hardware test didn't detect any problems.

Have you tried Ubuntu Remix on the netbook yet, if not this is a good article about it.

Or if you have another Windows PC and a 1GB pen drive try Universal Installer 1-2-3, that is the easy way through Windows.

1st, get a USB CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive or something or a recovery CD/DVD that came with the notebook

2nd, Insert the media (If it is it's own recovery software, head for the 'Fix boot problems' option, otherwise, Start the PC, insert the CD/DVD ROM, but do not boot from CD-DVD (Make sure it is a Windows XP SP3 Instalation disk)

3rd, After the "Press any key to boot off CD....." thing has gone, press F8 to get into the menu, then choose 'Last known good configuration'

4th, Windows shall now boot without problems.

Yes, I have tried these, and other similar setups. Nothing has worked unfortunately.

This is definitely one of the first things I tried. But it would never get past the windows logo screen.

Again,there may be some corruption going on here with boot partition.

Most or all options suggested above are implemented before Windows load screen starts.

Since you have run diagnostics on most crucial elements of your machine and no issues appear to be present,I would suspect file system damage.To rule out possible Windows corruption from various install attempts,run this command line by tapping F8 at startup.(NOT Windows startup,but machine startup).Select Safe Mode With Command Prompt.

(Note that by using this utility you will lose any and all data on the disk with focus)

Clean all and formatting takes quite some time (this command line usually takes about 2 1/2-3 hours on a 250GB HDD) so be patient if you decide to implement this.We are not going for the "quick" cleaning or formatting.

To access Advanced Boot Options,tap F8 key at startup.Select Safe Mode With Command Prompt.

Hit the ENTER key after each command.

DISKPART

LIST DISK (Generates a list of disks available)

SELECT DISK # (The "#" sign will be replaced by the disk number of your choice)

CLEAN ALL (Completely wipes disk and writes zeros to it)

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY (Creates a primary partition)

SELECT PARTITION 1 (Directs focus to newly created partition)

ACTIVE (Marks partition as active)

FORMAT (Formats the partition-if no format is chosen the default format will be evoked)

ASSIGN (Assigns a drive letter to selected partition)

EXIT

After cleaning all possible data on the disk to house Windows,boot from .ISO and select Custom Install (or the equivalent thereof).

If after this you have issues with Windows starting,you can be relatively sure you have hardware problem(s).
