Does anyone know what the Windows 2008 system files are ? Ive searched through the net but not been able to find anything yet.

I did do a search on a windows 2008 box for files with attributes that are set to system file but this doesnt include dll`s etc.

So far Ive collated a small list myself ....

  • C:\boot.ini
  • C:\Config.Msi
  • C:\IO.SYS
  • C:\MSDOS.SYS
  • C:\NTDETECT.COM
  • C:\ntldr
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host

If anyone can add to this list it would be much appreciated.

Thanks......

Hi there.

What is it that you are actually trying to achieve here ?

I've left my reply for a while to see if anyone else answered.

So........ You open up your system, look at the system files, and then what ?

There is no context to your request.

What are you trying to do ?

John.

Sorry I should of been more clear. I have a requirement to report on any changes to any system files. To achieve this I will use file access auditing on a set of defined system files.

Rather then just using the files that Microsoft define as system files via the system file attribute i was looking for a more of a "real world" list of system files including dll`s etc.

I have though now defined a list which was done by parsing certain xml tags within the C:\Windows\winsxs\Backup folder. From this list I then narrowed it down to around 30-40 files.

The above is all that was needed to be said actually. The rest of the wording just leads into a fog, and detracts away from what you are trying to do, and becomes confusing for anyone reading your post.

Try the following links, this should give you a general idea what you should be looking for:

Hope this is of some help on your pathway to knowledge.

To change the icons in windows firstly, you'll need to have your icons ready that you want to use in place of the default icons. You can either download icons in .ICO format or download icon libraries (DLL), icon packages, or even know the executable file that contains the icons you want.

Thanks for the tip

Alternatively you can create your own .ICO files. .
