It's always during the "formatting" stage. Or if I format the drive using other tools, then when it's checking the HD it shuts off. My question since I have tested the hardware and it's functional (and it won't do that in any other OS/windows version). Is there anything in WinNT 4 that causes it? bludgard Posted January 12, 2011 Report Share Posted January 12, 2011 My guess would be overheating of the CPU.That or the hard drive.I once reinstalled Windows after a clean-all and complete format.About halway through the update phase it shut down.There was no Event log for it.No crashdump.Nothing.The BIOS on this machine shuts it all down when the HD reaches 60*C.I think the CPU has a cap at 95*C before it puts the lights out.I know the CPU didnt't reach 95*,so that left the HD.I now run an extra fan or two when performing any task(s) that may put unusual stress on the HDD.And I usually give the machine a short breathing spell before diving back in.Haven't had the problem since. MANEMAN Posted January 13, 2011 Report Share Posted January 13, 2011 If you are trying to install straight onto that 80GB Barracuda disk of yours that is probably the problem.NT 4 wont recognise anything over 20 GB.Partitition your disk off to about 18GB, do the install.Download and install the latest Service Pack, and NT 4 should now recognise the other 62 GB so that you can use it.John. insect Posted January 17, 2011 Author Report Share Posted January 17, 2011 I'm in another country ATM, so I can't redo the testing. But, from my last test I do remember having done a 2GB ntfs partition using some linux tools capable of making ntfs v4 (nt4 compatible) partitions, and while the nt4 install routine did detect the partition as usable it started shutdown during the partition verification part (which goes before the actual installation).
