explorer.exe doesn't start up

Today I was installing .net framework and lastly internet explorer 7 since some other software required it. Initially the install of internet explorer got stuck so I retried. This time it did install and I restarted my laptop. When it was starting up windows xp sp3 it got stuck at start up and only showing my wallpaper. Also for a brief moment it showed a 'personalize settings' frame in the top left corner. When I went to the task manager (the only thing I seem to be able to access) it showed that explorer.exe wasn't running. Trying to run it manually didn't work, nor does starting up windows with the last known working configurations. When I go into safemode a message pops up asking me whether I want to be in safe mode or restore my settings. Every time I select 'yes' it pops up again and closes all my opened windows. Also my harddrive has been faulty for a while giving i/o device errors now and then.

Furthermore I can't restore my windows xp installation as I don't have a recovery disk. I hope anyone can tell me what's going on with my laptop, or better yet, what I can do to get it to work normally again.

Thanks in advance

I think the answer to your problem is in your question:

Also my harddrive has been faulty for a while giving i/o device errors now and then.

At the first sign of a hard drive being faulty, I always prepare for a replacement. There is no point in waiting for it to cure itself because it won't - it will only get worse.

The only practical thing you can do is replace the hard drive and re-install Windows. Provided you have a genuine Product Key (should be on a sticker on the base of the machine) you could beg or borrow a Windows disk (must be the same version as the original) and re-install. Alternatively, a repair shop should be able to do it for you.

Optiplex Said: you need a original cd

Are you agreeing or disagreeing with what Pops has given as advice Optiplex ?

Is there any advice that you could give to nargacuga that expands upon that which Pops has given ?

I'm finding your post of four words and an acronym without context to advice already given a little puzzling.

Are you saying Pops is wrong ?

John.
