Have You Had a Holiday Nightmare?

This is an absolutely true story – it proves that truth can be funnier than fiction.

I worked in the Middle East some years ago for 12 years which was the springboard for some fabulous holidays to the far East, Near East, Australia etc – places I may not have visited when living in the UK.

One year my wife and I had a long holiday which took in Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. Whilst in Bangkok I hired a guide and driver for 4 days to take us to see the sights – including some of the very seedy ones. On the fourth day my wife developed severe tooth ache and was terrified of going to a dentist there – but the guide personally recommended a private dentist they used who was excellent but a bit expensive. She was in too much pain to put up an argument and agreed to be taken there.

The car pulled up in front of a building on the corner of two roads and we were ushered through the door and into a less than pristine waiting room full of very sad looking people. The guide saw the look of horror on my wife’s face but said that the private dentist was on the first floor and led us up some stairs into a very plush suite of rooms occupied by 2 dentists. She made the dentist sterilise his tools in front of her before she let him near her and he did the job – an abscess had started on a back tooth which he treated and gave her antibiotics to take for two weeks. She was relieved and happy when we left.

The following day we were due to fly out of Bangkok in the evening and decided to take a walk around the area to see the real Thailand on foot. We had been walking for a couple of hours, sight-seeing, brushing off street hawkers, window shopping etc when we came upon a road junction I recognised from the day before. Diagonally opposite us was the dentist’s building we visited the previous day – above which was a sign in Thai and English stating “VD CLINIC - HERPES A SPECIALITY”. It was then we realised why everyone in the ground floor waiting room were looking so glum. The dentists were on the first floor above the advertised clinic.

My wife was gargling with antiseptic and cleaning her teeth several times a day for the rest of the holiday.
