AVI Files

Hi, my AVI files that don't change to media player thumbnail/picture whenever i go to a AVI file. I have transfered them (AVI FILES) to a portable hard drive, then connected said hard drive to a laptop and the AVI files change to media player thumdnails/picture straight away. Is this a problem with my media player on the computer?? and i've looked at the file settings compared them with the lap top and they are the same settings?? Am so puzzled!! Thanks

Hi John,

Thanks for replying to my post. I changed my set associations as you suggested (using windows media player, VLC player, classic player). I am still having no joy. My computer has Windows Vista 32bit operating system. When I open my folder that contains my AVI files (films) no green loading bar appears at the top of the screen or my AVI files change to a thumbnail/picture of the film, the file remains with AVI written on the file, however this change does happen on the laptop. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

I would suggest a system restore back to a time before the fault occured if possible.

If not, post up some screenshots here so that we can see exactly what is going on.

May be some corruption of the Windows registry.

You haven't used a registry cleaner recently by any chance have you ?

If the answer to that is no. - that is a good thing because they can cause all sorts of problems.

If you do the normal double left click on any of the AVI files, what happens ? Do they play, or does it just hang ?

Exactly what I was thinking, old chap.

Do you suppose sfc/ scannow with Windows install media would help?

If there are no images about from which to recover from, I am at a loss as to how to go about ridding my system of hobgoblins (other than reintallation).

system restore not worked, I've tried to post up a snapshot but this site won't let me I've never used a registry cleaner(don't know what that is). When I double click on a AVI file it plays with no problems at all. If you think its some corruption of the windows registry how do you go about fixing that?? I take it you don't think the windows media players at fault some how?? Thanks for your help. Phil

That's good, - and we've also worked out by process of elimination that you can by altering file associations play the AVI files in any player of your choice.

The machine then is functioning exactly as intended. - Period. - Yes ?

In my file indexes there is .wmv, .avi, .flv, .divx and numerous other video designations. Most will open on a double click in Windows Media Player - as expected. Those that don't will open in GOM player. REAL media files open in REAL Alternative and Quicktime files open in Quicktime Alternative.

Hi the problem isn't playing the file, its why isn't the thumbnail/picture popping up when looking at the AVI files.

John, just a little note to say thanks for the links you sent yesterday, they helped me sort out my thumdnails. Sorry for making you have a rant, am not very good with computer jargon yet!!! :lol: Alls well with my computer now and you are the MAINMAN!!! Once again, THANK YOU for your help.
