Ahluka
Hey there, i've just joined, and was looking for a general Windows problems forum, and this came up first :P My problem at the moment is with my CD/DVD drive. It seems to read discs fine, and write discs fine, and everything is fine, but then a friend burns a disc from his PC, and it seems to read on every other computer apart from mine? If i burn a CD, it works fine, as well as on other PCs, but if he does it it comes up as blank on my PC.Only thing i can note is that he tells windows to burn like a USB, not a finalized CD-RW (yes i'm talking about CD-RWs here to be more precise). But this still doesn't explain why my disc drive won't read his discs but will other peoples and my own. :\Any suggestions? Thanks,Ricky
-pops-
A first suggestion is to download a more comprehensive set of codecs.Look at http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm which should give you all the codecs you could ever want.Let us know how you get on. pawz7
I could learn something here perhaps. I thought that codecs were to address audio and video problems, but pops, you seem to be saying that cd drives use them as well? I did not know that...I thought the problem with cd drives not being able to read disks burned on some-one else's drive related to format issues. -pops-
Both CDs and DVD use different formats for storing data - as is notable if you have a look at the link I gave in my first reply - with DVDs there are dozens of formats in use.I does no harm to have the K-Lite pack on your machine(s). It takes up little space and can be a great help in getting difficult disk to play.K-Lite doesn't always remedy a problem, though. There are instances where there is an error in the disk player/writer itself but trying a codec collection as a first attempt at a cure will do no harm at all, may do a lot of good and will be useful in the future anyway. pawz7
thank you pops. I did have the K-Lite pack of codecs on my machine a while back as someone recommended it - and it was quite a large download I seem to recall, but i never seemed to need it, so got rid of it again; perhaps i will go get it once more :)
-pops-
When you have K-Lite installed it works silently doing its job when needed and you don't really know it's there but you would soon know if it was absent!
