Underclocking to save power consumption

Hello,

Is there a way to underclock my graphics card to reduce power consumption on the 12v rail - or maybe the CPU

My 500w power supply cant handle my system,

My choice was between a new PSU or a new fridge - the fridge barely made it

System Specs

500W Antec EarthWatts

Gigabyte GA-M7500SLI-DSA

AMD Phenom 8650 2.3Ghz

2gb ddr2 ram

Radeon HD 4870

You could try using ATI Tool ? - not sure exactly what effect it would have on power consumption :unsure:

The vertical slider bar on the left controls the GPU clock rate

The one on the right controls the memory clock rate.

Drag the bars downward to reduce the clock rates.

Once you have selected your clock rates, click the "Set Clock" button to assign the new clock rates.

These clock rates will only persist until the next time you boot Windows.

To arrange for the clock rates to be set to your new values every time Windows boots, click the "New" button.

Then select a name for your new profile.

The new profile will be created with the clock rates which are currently set.

Then click the "Settings" button.

Click the "Default" button to restore the clock rates to their original values.

If you are going to experiment with the ATI tool then bear in mind that you have to be careful or you could frazzle your GPU and/or graphics RAM :0

Only use small increments if overclocking (as opposed to underclocking that the OP wants to do) the graphics card.

I nearly frazzled one of my graphics cards by being too adventrous :excl:

Gotcha! I have had a little experience with under/over-clocking and have in fact fried a couple of CPUs and GPUs.:unsure:

I just like to browse tech related sites and have never run across this one. The software that was suggested won’t run on this machine anyway. Probably a good thing as I kind of see it as disposable anyway.:lol:

You probably have a Nvidia graphics card !

It’s Intel 82810E Graphics Controller. I do not know what I was thinking. This is a machine I picked from the side of the road. I thought it was ATI until I ran Speccy on it. Just goes to show….:unknw:
