-pops-
Replacement drives are low cost. It isn't usually worth the effort to attempt a repair.
Boris
Hi, i have a emachines 370 pc and it has a Samsung CD RW/DVD SM 332BThat drive was produced almost 7 years ago - it will unoubtedly need replacing.I have an eMachines of the same vintage as yours with me at the moment to extend its life for its pensioner owner.I have just upgraded it with old parts from my spares box - from its original 1.8GHz Celeron with 256 MB ram - to a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz and 1GB RAM
Baloteli123
himy emachines has been upgraded aswell to a 2.8Ghz and 2GB RAMi jus need to sort the cd rw dvd out
Boris
i jus need to sort the cd rw dvd outYou will not be able to find a drive to match your silver eMachines case - there is a rounded clip on silver fascia on your current one which protrudes about half an inch beyond the actual drive front. This clip on will normally not fit on the CD tray of any other drive (believe me I have tried !). Your replacement drive when fitted will thus be set back within the case. You will need to buy an IDE rather than SATA optical drive as there are no SATA ports on those eMachines motherboards. I doubt that you will find a new combo CD writer/DVD reader drive in the UK. Probably the best option would be a DVD-Writer - see link below for a couple which would be suitable :-/>http://www.ebuyer.com/search?page=1&sort=popularity&limit=10&store=33&cat=27&filtersubcat=183- from £16.87 + deliveryIf you just want to read CDs/DVDs then this one would be suitable :-/>http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190716£12.52 + deliveryGood luck :)

bludgard
I have the same problems reading disks that are supposed to be read on my Windows 7 machine. It will boot from any bootable CD/DVD but cannot read the disk within Windows. It use to burn and read rewritables, multi layer, and anything else I used to put into it. The machine has 2 more years warranty on hardware, but I loathe puting my wife's machine into anyone else's hands. I have tried VLC, Shark's Codecs, etc. ad nausea. I can not remember what the drive is but it is stock ACER 5517-5427. Cheers Ya'll,Jodyedit: I do have an image of the original ACER OS on two dual layer disks. I suppose I could try that to see if it would work. Would be an elimination at least.

Boris
Is the cable firmly attached at the motherboard and drive ends ?Have you tried an alternative IDE cable ?Go to Device Manager and uninstall the drive.Reboot and see if Windows re-recognising the drive fixes it ?
