My Dell monitor doesn't display properly on boot-up

Recommended Posts

Almost 3 years ago I bought a new Dell 2408 WFP monitor which was fine for the first year or so but after this developed an annoying fault on the monitor screen.

Namely on boot-up (i.e. when the monitor was cold), I got a series of green and black vertical lines as show below:

At first I didn't worry about it as after a few minutes as the monitor warmed up they all gradually disappeared.

However over the last few months it got to the stage that not all of the lines went away no matter how long I left the monitor on for !

Apparently I'm not the only one to suffer with this - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=13935125

I followed the advice in that thread and rang Dell and had a replacement (reconditioned monitor v3 compared to the v1 that I originally bought new) delivered a few weeks ago however although the lines don't make an appearance at all, the monitor has stopped coming on automatically when I switch my PC on.

What used to happen is that when the monitor received a signal from my graphics card, the monitor on/off button light used to go from yellow to green and the monitor used to display a picture.

Now I still get the monitor on/off light changing from yellow to green but the screen remains blank !

I can eventually get the monitor to display after a few minutes of experimenting with it by randomly pressing the on/off button to turn the monitor on and off but it's becoming a chore and I'm concerned that I could wear out the switch sensor.

Any idea if I can do something to rectify this problem ?

I have tried updated my monitor driver but after Windows did a search online, I got a message saying that no newer version could be found than the drivers that I have installed.

As the monitor is working okay apart from this start-up problem, I don't really want to ring up Dell again as it's not long since I rang them to have my original monitor replaced with the refurbished one that I'm using now !

I think that you should contact Dell about this. Only by getting feedback can they deal with any problems. For all you or I know this could be the start of a much more widespread problem and if it is, Dell will be only too pleased to know about it.

Okay I will ring Dell up again although I don't like doing it.

By the way in case anyone is wondering how I had my monitor replaced after nearly 3 years, I had a 3 year on-site warranty when I bought the monitor from new.

Update:

I rang Dell this afternoon and they came up with the solution as they do know about the (refurbished) Dell monitors not automatically switching themselves on.

Apparently it's a side-effect of a circuitry upgrade that they used to get rid of the red and green vertical line problem on versions 1 and 2 - my refurbished monitor is v3.

It doesn't happen with every PC but on the ones that it does happen to, I was told to turn the monitor off by pressing the on/off switch until the light goes out.

Now after the PC is turned on, turn the monitor on and it should show a display and it does.

I tried it a few times to make sure it wasn't a fluke !

Not being able to have the monitor startup from standby mode isn't a big deal and I can live with it :D

p.s. the Dell customer service is first class, like the last time when I rang them up and they said that they would send a rep around the next day to replace my (faulty) monitor with the refurbished one.

Dell kept their word and the next morning, the rep showed up!

RESOLVED.
