SheTex
So, be gentle with me but... I'm looking at Task Manager because my computer is crunching and running very slowly. I've got is sorted by CPU and a quick scan at any given time shows that I'm running <20%, but according to the CPU Usage at the bottom of the screen, it's showing 70-100% usage. Also, it shows there are several instances of chrome.exe running...is that one for every tab I have open? I've run my virus scan but nothing comes up. How do I go about clearing CPU so my machine doesn't clunk so much?
Makcalable
Can you open up the Task manager go to processes Tab and stretch it so all processes are in view and then take a snapshot and post it here? I know you said you have done a virus can but can you follow this HERE and this one HERE too? Lets us know the results but before you do could you post a snapshot of processes first. bludgard
... there are several instances of chrome.exe running...is that one for every tab I have open? If I remember correctly, opening a tab in Chrome browser opens many instances of chrome.exe for each tab (or widow). If you are sure you are free of virus/malware:It could be that there are a lot of programs starting and/or updating as Windows loads. Also, if you use a lot of media related software, make sure any media-sharing services are not running in the background without your consent to do so. I'm confident that the culprit will be brought out when we see the screenshot of Task Manager.

bludgard
It appears that iTunes has your machine jammed up. I count at least 5 running processes from what is visible in you screenshot; AppleMobileDeviceService.Exe taking up 50% of your CPU at idle. Or was iTunes actively running when the screenshot was taken?I do not see any obvious malware running. If you will, briefly list any devices you access with iTunes. Some services relating to iTunes can safely be started manually instead of loading with Windows (on an as needed basis), therefore freeing up CPU and RAM for other (priority) tasks. There is also a "slim" installation that can be done with iTunes. It involves extrating certain .exe files from the program and installing without all the unecessarry bloating. If you do not depend on iTunes for multiple devices, this may be for you. SheTex
I honestly can't remember if iTunes was up when I took the ss. I ran Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor with nothing coming up. I do think something is wrong with iTunes. I use an iPhone and iPad with it and it is hanging up when I try to sync my phone. I tried to download the latest software, but maybe it didn't work properly? Or maybe it just isn't suppose to work with my old school 3Gs? SheTex
Oh man, I may have just botched something big time. I "ended processes" on the "tree" for MobileServices. It took away about 10 processes, but...it dropped my CPU use down to 1%
bludgard
No "botch". Bugger is more like it. iTunes is killin'n you. Feel free to kill the process/service if you feel like it. It is your machine. :lol:I'll be back.
bludgard
Apologies for the late "return", SheTex. I fell ill for a bit; a birthday party gone right. :lol:As for iTunes, uninstall the program completely. After removal via Add/Remove Programs, search iTunes on C: drive (or wherever your Windows is installed) and delete any leftovers. Reinstall the program. If the problem returns, I will extract the files from the software to try the "slim" install. You may have already found a solution by ending the process by way of Task Manager when not in use. Setting the service(s) tied to iTunes to Manual may be another option: You just start it/them when before plugging in your devices.
SheTex
Hope you're feeling better. I deleted it via Add/Remove, but, and here's something really newb, I can't find my "Search" button on the Start button!?!
