Reinstalling windows on an acer netbook upgraded to win 7

Hi. I have an acer aspire one netbook which came with vista which I upgraded to win 7. I want to wipe it clean and start fresh but i'm not sure the best way to do that. The netbook obviously didn't come with disks because it has no disk drive but it does come with a program called "Acer eRecovery Management". What I am wondering about is since I upgraded to windows 7 will I run into issues running this program? It is fine if it reverts back to vista because i can always upgrade back to win 7 again. I just don't want it to mess up my operating system because the "eRecovery" program was designed to restore vista running from vista. Has anyone else ever tried to do this and how did it work out? Does anyone know of a better method of re-installing it on a netbook? Thanks.

Austin

If I were doing the job for you, I would first "Disk Image" the present operating system as a safeguard. (Disk Image stored externally on another drive.)

I would then try to put the Acer eRecovery program into operation which "should" get you back to the original Vista install.

If the Vista recovery goes well, (Overwriting the present Win 7 installation) I would then go forwards with the Windows 7 upgrade.

Theoretically you should just be able to put the recovery program into operation and end up back at Vista. Unfortunately what happens in real life and what should happen in theory, most times does not work out too good when it comes to computers.

What I'm saying here is that if you do make one almighty cock-up of it, - you will at least have a disk image that you can put back on the machine to get you back to where you are now.

Once I had managed to get a "Brand New" Windows 7 installation up-and-running, I would immediately make a disk image of that installation too, for the future.

Take it slowly, think it through. Disk Imaging software doesn't need to be expensive, and you could use the excellent Macrium Reflect Free Edition. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

An external hard drive always comes in useful.

Not quite sure what disk imaging is all about ? - It is just like taking a snapshot of your operating system. - A snapshot that can be put back into place in a matter of 6- 25 minutes.

Here are some useful guides for Macrium at least:

That's what I would do.

As I am most-times working with other folks computers, I never work without the safety-net of a Disk Image.

( I would imagine that about 99% of people that I advise to use Disk Imaging never do ! :uhm: )

They ask a question. - You give 'em an answer. And then they do something completely different. - Go figger ! ?:unsure:

Thanks for the advice....I will make a disk image and then just use the acer eRecovery software and pray that it works.

...about the display name thing....I went into my account settings and I could not for the life of me find where to change my display name (maybe i'm going blind or just had a brain fart)...could you please enlighten me on where to change it? Thanks.

The acer eRecovery software should work - provided the original Recovery partition is still there and hasn't been deleted.

I've changed your Display name for you :) You will still need to use your original Log in Name when logging in.

Control Panel / All Control Panel Items / User Accounts / Change Your Name

Rename the username to the username you would like. The user folders will probably still remain the old wrong username but at the login screen etc you'll see your new username.

EDIT: I see what he means now Boris. :paperbag1: :paperbag1: :paperbag1:

I'm a Wally innit ?
