Lamb Chop
Bought this HD as a back up and thought to check it prior to doing a recovery and found it wasnt working correctly at all. Went to their Website to find that many others had similar problems with this Passport. Anyway knowing I had to do a recovery on because of corrupted IE8 I took it back to where I bought it to see if I could get a replacement as still had 424 days of warranty and Asutralian law says repair in quick time refund or replacement etc. Their tech plugged it into his computer and said he couldnt find anything on it - and didnt have one my size - bigger now. Mine is 320GB. Smallest 500GB. So he told me he would clear out the stuff on it program and to cut and paste my files and do the revoery which I did and it worked fine. Showed up as HD E on computer and again once recovered and put the files back onto new OS etc. Problem is having got the computer up and running and catching up etc thought to try it and had in the meantime bought Acronis 2012 as a better back up recommended on here previously. And today plugged in the HD for first time to set it up as got a bit of spare time and blooming heck it comes up as devices with removable storage and WDmartware instead of Drive E as it was before So thougth bugger - try to unstall it with Revo Pro Forced as not on programs and it came u with Drive F and I put in WD Smartware in both places and off it went and deleted keys and docs and I thought good. But no it is still showing as Removable devices instead of HD E. Now I have no idea left what to do. Dont fancy trying to use it as a back up as it didnt work last time and same for others and could go troppo again as what made it in the first place and apart from all that it wont let me in now and I have the password So I guess Revo took the password off too. Any ideas? What I need to do is to find a way to format the HD.
Alan2273
You can do it using GParted, which you have to download as an ISO then burn it to a CD and boot your computer from the CD.The first link is the download, (126.4 MB's), the second link is a tutorial on how to use it. http://sourceforge.n...ed-live-stable/ http://www.dedoimedo...rs/gparted.html
Lamb Chop
Thanks for that but not sure how I can use it - because the external HD is showing up under devices with removablestorage. Yesterday just before I had to shut down - the HD showed up in computer as this time Drive G but todaygone again back to being under only marked Smartware etc. I dont want to partition the HD on my computer. Have I got this wrong?
-pops-
Are you booting your machine with the drive plugged in? If yes, try rebooting without the drive and then plug it in when everything else is up and running. If no, try rebooting with the drive already plugged in. Either way, ensure you use the "Safely Remove" facility when unplugging.

Lamb Chop
OK rebooted without the external HD and then plugged it in and the computer made a sound as usual nothing else and then looking at my computer it came up again as Devices removable storage WD Smartware (F). It is going through the numbers as original HD is C and it has moved along was E for a while and I was able to use itto cut and paste files - slow but got the lot and then pasted it onto the new clean OS had a bit of problem with files withinfiles etc. but sorted that.
