Installing a new SSD - advice please

Recommended Posts

Hello Folks,

I have at long last decided to buy a SSD.

This one:

I am enlisting my hardware friend to help me do the deed.

He has a history of making 486s but not a lot of experience in modern machines.

Apparently we need to make certain settings to the BIOS when we set up else you cannot do the settings afterwards.

I should be grateful for your help and assistance please.

From things I've read (not done one myself - they are still far too expensive yet :D )- all that you need to do on a modern mobo is to go into the BIOS/UEFI and change the SATA mode to AHCI

Are you doing a fresh install of 7 with this ? - I believe that is recommended, even if it is a bit longer.

Have a look through this ?

Well all seems alright - yes it is a bit more speedy - but then any new system is a bit more speedy - programs seem to launch quicker than of late, esp Word & Excel - let's hope these Office programs stay sharp. Oh and the Acronis backup time was halved.

It's taking ages to reconfigure everything. for example I go to unzip a file and find I haven't installed WinRAR. Grrhh.

TRIM is the one thing I have ignored - partly coz I do not understand it.

When things quieten down will have another look.

[since found the cmd query to run to check its switched on - it is.

Thanks for asking.
