Endless indexing or something else?

Hi.

I have a curious problem that started not long after I applied the SP2 update to Windows 7. Whay happens is that if I go into a folder on a drive everything might be OK until I decide to organize the file list some other way, like according to Date Modified. Then, the address bar gets a progress bar look to it as if it is indexing the folder. Problem is, it never ends and I cannot use the folder...I have to get out of it and come back in. But it also means that I cannot change the order of the folder contents, or it will all just start again.

It also happens intermittently. Sometimes if I click on Computer, it will start the problem immediately. Then, the only way to get to a drive is to click the down arrow to the right iof the address bar and click on a drive there.

Thinking the problem was maybe that indexing might have gotten screwed up somehow, I turned off indexing altogether in msconfig and changed the properties of each drive so that they would not index. This seemed to work at first, but the problem is back with a vengeance.

Not sure what to do.

Thank you for any help!
