Hard drive crashed on an older Dell computer. I installed new hard drive & re-installed XP Pro with disc provided by Dell. The MS web site will not allow me to update Windows. I repeatedly, over multiple days, get the following message:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

For self-help options:

For assisted support options:

IE Explorer will only run in "No-Adds on" mode. My guess was I needed to activate Windows, but System Tools has no available entry for activation. I re-formatted hard drive & re-installed XP Pro again but keep getting the same problem. Any suggestions????

Do all of the above because bludgard is correct. :)

(And a darned good chap.)

You can also try installing SP3 if it is not already installed. (Maybe that the Dell disc is a barebones XP with no service packs whatsoever ?? )

Get Service Pack 3 here: http://download.micr...SP3-x86-ENU.exe

Do not install Service Pack 3 on systems with AMD chips unless a special hotfix has been applied first. This hotfix needs to be applied before SP3, otherwise your system may get stuck in a loop and never start. Click here for the AMD Windows XP SP3 hotfix. http://www.softwarep...0x0000007E.html The file will then download directly from Microsoft's servers.

You may also need to re-register your Windows Update DLL.

  • You will need to start a Command Prompt. To do this go to Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

  • Type the following commands (one at a time)

  • regsvr32 wuapi.dll
  • regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
  • regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
  • regsvr32 wucltui.dll
  • regsvr32 wups.dll
  • regsvr32 wups2.dll
  • regsvr32 wuweb.dll

If you use the following piece of software you can not only download your updates but also SP3. And...... you can save them as an ISO and burn to disk to install anytime you like in the future. (Also works for other operating systems too - read guide. )

I have used this service quite regularly over the years. - It's good. :)

Set it up for XP just as I have done in the picture with the same boxes ticked

You'll all understand it. - Jeez it aint Rocket Science !

Once it starts downloading go for a long bike ride. (It's a lengthy process !)
