Fonts change

I recently installed some new fonts on my computer for use in photoshop.

Now when I go to a forum I regularly visit the default font is different. It's all fat and blocky for some reason. (Actually this forum looks like its got the same situation too.)

Whilst composing a message if I highlight the text and select Arial in the drop down font menu it changes back to the old way, but the default is still the blocky version. After posting a message it displays the old thin font which I prefer.

I will take a screen shot to demonstrate.

This is how it appears by default now, which I assume is supposed to be Arial.

This has been highlighted and changed to Arial and appears as the older thinner version.

This has happened before when I installed an old game - Age of Empires Gold. It seemed to change the way Arial is displayed in firefox, or it replaced the default font settings or something. Back then I solved the problem by doing a system restore to just before I installed the program.

I like the old thinner Arial and want this blocky one gone. I'm guessing it is something to do with how windows chooses default fonts? or maybe its firefox? Really have no idea how to fix it, hoping someone can help me?

I should add that its windows 7. Also I was using a font manager Nexus Font but didn't have the problem until I installed a bunch of Helvetica fonts. And I know that Helvetica and Arial are virtually identical and have some history but that maybe part of the problem??

When you highlight the text and click on Arial it changes to the old thin style, but then if you click on Arial again it changes back to the thick one again.

It's obviously not a major problem just annoying, like having to walk around wearing scubba flippers everywhere.

Try a System Restore to a time before you made this change.

Install the fonts that you want specifically for Photoshop in the "Photoshop fonts folder",

if you have a lot of fonts installed, loading fonts in the "normal" manner can sacrifice and change Windows performance.

If the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts" folder doesn't exist, simply create it. Adobe Photoshop CS5

and newer versions do not contain this Font folder by default (instead you will see FontsRecommended and FontsRequired folders), in which case, you still need to create the Fonts folder. ( They left a whole lot of stuff out of CS5 including TWAIN support.

I've managed to download it all from Adobe and put it all back in again. - Crazy ! )

Remember, if you load too many fonts it will take Photoshop that much longer to load. So just go easy on plugins and fonts or you can sit for ages waiting for Photoshop to open up.

Thats the problem. I don't want to do a system restore, want to fix it without doing that.

I've had to set up the TWAIN thing as well. A real PITA ! Didn't know Adobe had its own font folder.

In a past install I had thousands of fonts installed and it slowed everything down massively. Learnt my lesson on that one. Thats why I use a font manager to view them and choose only the individual ones I want to install.

I went to control panel - fonts - font settings - restore default font settings and it did nothing.

I then deleted the fonts I had installed from the font folder (three types of Helvetica) and hey presto problem solved.

I completed the project but I might need them in the future so what is going on here?

I was under the impression that Helvetica was used primarily on macs and Arial was the windows imitation version and the one most commonly found in web browsers? It seems that windows 7 cannot handle having Helvetica installed. The fat blocky font that appeared and was the problem was not what I installed.

If anyone knows it would help, but for now the problem is solved. Thanks for the responses.

Just as a matter of interest, which herd do you belong to ? I once bred some Longhorns in the way north of the British isles. Just struck me that I may well know your Pa. Windows never did look that favourably upon fonts. - And Immigrants ? - Even less so. :)

( Bill Gates and I argued continuosly on this one, but I suppose that if a Mexican abused your tortoise you may well be thinking along the same lines.)

Seriously - keep fonts to a minimum within Windows. If third part software has the capability to accommodate fonts, - use it !
