WinXP not detecting USB mouse or Keyboard

Thrown out old keyboard & mouse & replaced. Both are USB.

XP fails to detect them at logon.

I can use the keyboard in BIOS & have checked BIOS to make sure that USB is not disabled.

So, I can't logon in either normal or safe mode.

There are no PS2 sockets.

The USB ports are working because I can plug in a Flash Drive and see it in BIOS boot options.

I have tried mouse & keyboard in all six USB sockets, restarted, waited for several minutes but still they are not detected.

I have now run out of ideas.

Can anyone out there help at all?

I borrowed another keyboard, same make as the old one and it was detected.

So, having logged on I installed the new one and voila!

Seems odd though, the new keyboard worked fine on other PCs but on the XP box none of the six USB sockets would detect it or any of four other keyboards I tried.

Thanks for you input.
