Hey Folks,

Ok this is a bit of a weird issue. I googled for a bit and didn't find a single other person with this problem.

My "Sound" menu won't open.

When I right click on the Volume button in the task bar. Trying to launch "Sound","Playback Devices", or "Recording Devices" get no reaction from the machine.

No errors or freezing.

The sound itself works but I can't access the menu for it.

Launching it through the Control Panel doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

Windows 8 Pro 64bit

Edit: Here is a video I made of the issue. There is no sound, but I can assure you that I am clicking like mad.

Hmmmm..... A head scratcher indeed. - Pass.

If anything I would probably suggest almost verbatim a similar course of diagnosis to the one offered in this post: http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=50567

No initial diagnosis, no way forward. - No pain, no gain sort of situation really.

Forum answers are at best crafted guesses. - Diagnosis is the real deal.

Windows contains some really good diagnostic tools these days. - It's not all bloat as some people would have us believe.

Hang around here for a while though. - You never know, someone may just guess at the problem correctly. :)

Hope you get it sorted soon.

John.

Hmmmm I looked at the Reliability History and it showed nothing pertaining to my sound. MsMpEng.exe seems to crash alot.

Also strange when I woke my PC up from sleep this morning the Sound Menu was open on the Desktop! Unfortunately as soon as I tried to interact with it it froze and I had to use Task Manager to close it.

And that statement helps you with the diagnosis of the original problem in which way ?
