bludgard
One cannot (as far as I know) upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit. One must Custom install to change the OS architecture. The rest would depend on what the machine will be used for.
AlanHo
How did you intend to install Win7 with a new mobo using upgrade discs?
colin_90
Hi. I will 'starrt again' with installing XP then upgrade to win 7. I would like to go with 64bit to access more memory for video editting but concerned that the product key is tied to the 32bit version I was using when PC 'died' last week
AlanHo
It is possible to do a clean install of Windows 7 to a formatted hard drive using upgrade media without first installing XP or Vista. Details here (I can vouch for it working - I have now done it 3 times using option 3) http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
You don't need to install the original OS before upgrading; you just need the serial numbers of both versions.
colin_90
Thanks for that, but is the product code tied to the 32bit version I have used it for or will it work with the 64bit version?
AlanHo
I'm not sure - but it is easy to find out. Try installing the 64 bit version. It would be nice to hear how it went......
JiniOnline
Thanks for that, but is the product code tied to the 32bit version I have used it for or will it work with the 64bit version? You can install Windows 7 32 bit using any CD with your existing product key but not with 64 bit version. You can perform custom installation to switch to 64 bit Windows 7.
